How to Write a CV for Graduate School


A curriculum vitae is usually longer than a resume and has a less standardized format. A CV is often required by the applicants of graduate programs. Your CV should contain an outline of your academic achievements, work history, professional affiliations, extracurricular activities and references, when applying for a graduate program. Here are the guidelines which specify how to write a CV for graduate school.

Instructions

  • Begin with your name and details of contact including phone number, email and residential address in the CV.
  • Write the objective statement next. You need to explain your academic and professional goals, for attending the graduate school. Personal statement should be tailored according to the specific graduate program.
  • Specify the name of the university from where you graduated your degree and the major and minor subjects. Include the month and year of graduation. Avoid using abbreviated school or degree names.
  • List your work experience, starting with the last recent position held by you, including the company name, job title and description of job role.
  • Explain about any undergraduate projects you have taken up. If you do not have any major research experience, you can mention the skills relevant to research that you possess, like knowledge about statistical programs.
  • Mention about any articles which you have published in academic journals. You can also specify about any pending publication that you have. Mention any presentations given by you, at academic events.
  • Describe any honors or awards that you have achieved in academic years. Write the complete name of the prize and the year of its achievement.
  • Specify any extracurricular activities you were involved in. If you are a member of any professional organizations or honors societies, that are relevant to your study field, you should mention them as well.
  • Provide one or two references of professors or advisors from your previous graduate years towards the end of CV. Specify the name, job title and contact details for the references.
