Clinical Perfusionists are healthcare professionals who are state-certified to operate external cardiopulmonary machines to maintain this function while patients undergo open heart surgery involving heart transplants or valve bypass.  These machines take over these functions to sustain the patient’s life when the patient’s heart is deliberately stopped to facilitate surgical treatment.
